WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
ABOUT THE TASTER SESSION
Mindfulness meditation is a practice that shapes and tones the mind. Research shows that regular meditation improves physical and emotional health and wellbeing. The man most credited with bringing secular mindfulness to the west, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines mindfulness as: “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally, to the unfolding of experience moment to moment”.
In this video, you can hear Professor Kabat-Zinn describing what mindfulness is. Why not give yourself the opportunity to experience some of these basic mindful skills?
How mindfulness is different to everyday awareness
Modern research on Mindfulness
How mindfulness brings health to body and mind
Formal mindfulness practice
How mindfulness can be applied in everyday life
Facts and myths of mindfulness
The taster includes small group and pair discussions; a variety of formal mindfulness practices (meditations); suggestions for bringing mindfulness to your everyday life; as well as a Powerpoint presentation introducing the main topics.
The taster topics will be supplemented by a take away pack to help you reflect on the session and to put mindfulness to practice. The pack also means that you do not need to take notes and can simply relax, take in the information and immerse yourself in the discussions and meditations.
This session has a maximum of 12 places so early booking is advised. You will also get access to MP3s with two mindfulness practices and also a pdf with a 10-page handout with further resources.
In the 90-minute session, we combine theory and practice so that you leave with both knowledge and experience of mindfulness. We will introduce you to the principal skills and techniques of mindfulness and you will learn about the scientific research that supports its effectiveness.
You will also experience first hand a few practical mindfulness exercises and you will take home a brief meditation that you can start to put to practice in your everyday life straight away.
